#DorsetHiddenBooks

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

The children were so excited to find a book hidden in the park at Kings Park.

It was one of the 'Dorset Hidden Books' adventure and the message invited us to read and keep the book as long as we liked, re-hide the book and then join the 'Dorset Hidden Books' Facebook group and share your finding photo. We shared our hiding photo instead.

All the children have enjoyed listening to our zoo story countless times, made all the more special by the way we found it. We are now excited to start hiding more books and of course we are hopeful of finding some too!

What a great way to engage children in reading and foster a love of books to last a life time.

There are lots of facts and figures relating to the importance of reading to children. Here are just a few to get you thinking:

  • If you read just one book a day to your child they will have been read 1825 books by their 5th birthday.

  • Children learn 4,000 to 12,000 words per year through reading.

  • If you read to your child for 20 minutes a day, they will hear 1,800,000 words a year.

  • Children who read 1,000,000 words a year are in the top 2% of reading achievement.
